Race Reports from Ambassador Team Member – Daryl Flacks

Lakeside signifies the last race of the MultiSport Canada Recharge with Milk Triathlon Series and my fourth and final race for Series Points. It’s my third year competing at Lakeside and I’m glad to report I achieved both my goals (1) Overall Win and (2) Top Spot – “Male 45-49” Age Group (AG) – Overall Series Points. Was it an ideal performance? No, but it’s important to take pleasure in one’s achievements and simply put, be happy!

Lakeside is what I like to consider an “honest venue.” From the out-and-back loops on the hard packed dirt and gravel roads of the run to the false flats, rolling hills and ever present wind on the bike course, Lakeside has its challenges. If that isn’t enough, 2016 saw the addition of fresh tar and chip road surfaces to a portion of the last 10 km leg of the bike, increasing the rolling resistance and ultimately slowing forward momentum.

The morning started early, as we hit the road from Windsor. Dianne and Dakota were scheduled to volunteer at the venue from 7:00 am – 2:30 pm requiring an earlier than normal departure time.

With the humidity gone, fall temperatures made for nearly ideal racing conditions. I scanned the list of registered participants making note of the competition. The field was relatively small and that I attribute to a long season of racing and multiple venues being held on the same weekend. Of note was Kevin Gallagher – National Champion 50-54 AG. Kevin is a solid, all around competitor and one who would challenge for the win if I faltered on the day. It’s no secret, I’ve been battling low energy levels as of late but I was confident that barring a mechanical issue I could secure the win with a dominating bike leg.

The day’s events unfolded according to script with lack luster runs and a hard push on the bike to solidify the win. Here’s the “Coles Notes” version of how the day unfolded.

Run 1 – 10K

Having ran this course twice before with a 39:36 best time, I had no grand illusions of tearing it up at breakneck speeds. I was hoping for something around 40 minutes. Taking the first run out too hard was a sure recipe for disaster. The challenging bike course that followed would certainly chew you up and spit you out. I took the early lead, easing into a comfortable pace with the ever present pitter patter of who I believed was Mr. Gallagher. It was at the 2.5K turn-around that my suspicions were confirmed with a gap forming on the remainder of the field. At the 5K turn-around, the gap on Kevin was nearly identical. 7.5K and Kevin looked determined and holding strong. Nearing the 9K marker I started to cramp, requiring that I break stride to regroup and there it was…the pass. I had faltered and Kevin quickly capitalized. I had no response but to remain calm and minimize the gap before heading onto the bike. Final time: 41:00 minutes. I will say, Kevin held strong and was rewarded with the top run split of 40:41 minutes. I wasn’t panicking quite yet, with a 21 second gap following transition, my strongest leg was waiting and I was riding a wave of confidence.

Bike – 40K

I was now on the hunt and it didn’t take long until I spotted Kevin just up the road. As we turned south at the 5k point the gap was noted and the push was on. It was a short uphill and then a surge of power to make the pass as I hoped to discourage any ideas of holding on. Maximum speeds reached 59km/hr as I moved through the field of Triathletes. I was pleased with the effort on the bike and the ability to hold my speed despite the wind and the hills. It was the last 10K though where energy levels dropped, road conditions worsened and those nasty rollers had me working harder for less. Final time: 1:02:41 and an average speed of 38.29 km/hr. This was most certainly my fastest bike split (course specific) and a great confidence booster heading into Barrelman next weekend. I crossed the timing mat with more than a 3:30 lead heading into transition.

Run 2 – 5K

The final run was all about conserving energy and getting to the finish line for the overall win. I was certain that my bike had sealed the deal and barring a complete meltdown I was going to take the win at Lakeside. Nearing the 3 km marker, I crossed paths with Kevin. We slapped hands on the pass acknowledging our respect for one another. Final time: 22:58 minutes. Not pretty, but on this day enough to secure the overall win in a Final Time: 2:07:59. Dakota took a brief break from his volunteering duties to come over and give me a high five – “you did it dad, you won!” He was proud of me…and that to me, meant the world!

I had the opportunity to meet a truly inspirational athlete this weekend. Ryan Van Praet, for those who may not know him, Ryan is a visually impaired Paratriathlete. His energy, humor and positive outlook are simply awesome and he’s one hell of an athlete. Ryan is a proud Ambassador for MultiSport Canada and the 2016 Recharge with Milk Triathlon Series, 3Sixty5 Cycling and Skechers Performance Canada- need we say more?

Redemption is now less than a week away. Follow me as I attempt to reclaim my Barrelman Bike/Run title, September 18th, 2016. It’s no secret; I’m going after the elusive 40 km/hr avg. speed for the 90K bike split. Confidence is running high; now let’s hope the weather cooperates.
