Toronto Island 2011 Post-race news

Complete Our Post-Race Survey and Get Additional Ballots to the Season Long Draw

We really do use the feedback you provide to improve our races and hope you will take a few minutes to complete our Customer Satisfaction Survey. Just complete the survey, and if you compete in three or more races you will get an additional ballot for the Season Long Draw. You just need to tell us what you think of the race. Here is the Toronto Island Post-Race Survey.

Our Season Long Draw For 2011

Enter three or more races during the season and be eligible to win a prize in our Season Long Draw. There are over $10,000 in prizes.

Back again for an eighth year is our Season Long Draw. The prize line-up is impressive with prizes from Felt Bikes (courtesy of Gears Bike Shop) CompuTrainer, TYR, Timex, Trico, coaching packages and more to come.

It's our way of thanking you for coming out to our races all year. With the draw being held at the end of October 2011 it means the more you race the better your chance to win. As you can see we are off to a fantastic start with the prize list so far. We will track your races and once you have entered THREE OR MORE RACES you are automatically entered. You also get additional chances to win by completing our post race survey.

We intend to keep adding prizes all year and will keep updating the prize list as the season progresses. The Season Long Draw page has all of the details.

Thank You To The Retailers and Sponsors At Toronto Island

We would not be able to provide the quality of races and draw prizes without the sponsors and retailers who support our series. Please check out all of the Series Sponsors at the end of this newsletter. Special thanks to the retailers and sponsors who were at the race or contributed draw prizes this weekend. They were:

Training Resources Section - Recharge With Milk

We receive many questions about training, what to do on race day, rules etc. The MultiSport Canada Training Resources webpage has a great deal of information about those topics and more. The latest addition to the Training Resources section is Training With Chocolate Milk. While you are there why not check out all of the other pages.

A Chance For A Free Entry in 2012!

Please help us and our sponsors and you could win a FREE race!

The support of sponsors is vital to any race or series. One of the reasons that companies sponsor a series like ours is because they want you to get to know about them and their products. Here are some of the positive outcomes of sponsor support in 2011:

  • We will be able to offer Chocolate Milk and Hero Burgers at our races
  • HEED is back on course from Hammer Nutrition
  • There will be coloured technical shirts from Brooks, just as you asked us in your survey responses
  • Wetsuits with the TYR Racer of The Day

We have always been very cautious about how often we contact our customers because we respect your privacy and time. We also guarantee that we NEVER share individual personal customer information with anyone, ever!

I would really appreciate it if you would take 5 minutes and complete our annual survey. Your answers will help us improve our races and also find out how we can get good deals for our customers. On top of that we will be drawing from the survey respondents for 5 free races in 2012.

Toronto Island Race Report & Results

By Roger Hospedales of Triathlon Magazine Canada

First of all, thanks go out to all of the volunteers, sponsors, on-site retailers, athletes, and spectators for your contributions towards another great Toronto Island race weekend.

Just like at Cobourg, an early morning fog welcomed Saturday’s Give It A Tri racers.

Thankfully, it cleared out to make for an excellent day of racing amongst the backdrop of the unmistakable Toronto skyline.

Saturday’s Foggy Give It A Tri Day

Toronto’s Randall McKenna and Kirsten Vergara (both pictured below) both took the overall wins for the day. McKenna, a regular GT 12.9 winner at our events, finished the course in 36:04 and Vergara, a young up and comer on the triathlon scene, crossed the line in 38:08. Both times were good enough to give both of them a little more than a 40 second margin of victory. Toronto’s Alex Taylor came in second (36:46) to McKenna, and Neil Morrison of Oakville claimed third (36:50). While in the women’s race, London’s Anne Nicolussi took a break from long distance racing to take second place in 38:57, and Toronto’s Jennifer Knowles finished third in 39:54.

In the Team Challenge competition, the team of “No Train All Pain” (Scott Knowles, Brett Knowles, Tim Knowles, and Jennifer Knowles) were the winners of the HERO Team Challenge and won a box of HERO Burgers valued at $150.

Congratulations go out to our large group of First Timers. Welcome to the Triathlon Family!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

For those that participated in the Give It A Tri, please check your wetsuits. One of our athletes rented a Women's Small Nineteen Sleeveless Wetsuit for the event and it was mistakenly picked up. If you have it, please contact Hyedie (hyedie@happyd-designs.com).

Sunday’s Triathlon and Duathlon Races

After a few second place finishes (Cobourg Olympic distance, Bala Falls, Gravenhurst Olympic distance), Hamilton’s Keith Marchant (pictured below) finally made it to the top of the podium with a 1:26:02 clocking. He earned the win with a 12:59 swim, 44:08 ride and a 27:14. Paul Bregin of North York took second (1:26:43), and St. George’s Derek Quick finished third (1:28:10).

Angela Quick (pictured with her family below) dominated the women’s race with her trademark strong swim (11:56 - third overall out of the water), and added a 48:12 bike and 33:35 run to cross the finish line in 1:35:11. Sarah Kent of Toronto finished second (1:42:37), and Jennifer Ogg of London captured third in 1:43:11.

David Frake of Toronto (pictured below), had another dominating performance in the Duathlon. This time his margin of victory was a little over 12 minutes! He used top splits in all three segments (14:11 for the first 4.5 km run, 41:11 for the 29.15 km bike, and 14:35 for the final 4.5 km run) to stop the clock at 1:12:02. Brampton’s Peter MacLeod came in next for second (1:24:480, and Mihira Lakshman (the editor of Canadian Running Magazine) rounded out the top three with a time of 1:25:20.

Tatjana Zaharova (pictured below) of Etobicoke also enjoyed a healthy cushion (four minute plus) for her win thanks to posting the fastest first (17:50) and second (18:58) runs of the day. Her finishing time of 1:31:03 put her ahead of Oakville’s Jennifer Gordon (1:35:36), and London’s Julie Skoretz (1:41:04).

The winners of the HERO Team Challenger were Team MultiSport Zone. They were comprised of the Angela, Derek, and Steve Quick and they took home a box of HERO Burgers valued at $150.

A Reminder to all Athletes

Maintaining great relationships with the communities hosting our races is essential to ensuring that these races are successful and continue to exist. Therefore, athletes, please remember to be courteous out on the race course. Not only to volunteers and fellow racers, but also to the residents of the community you are racing in. And just like when you are out training, you need to share the road. It is a race but we do not own the road. Adopting the spirit of sharing and co-operation will make it a better experience for all.
