Bracebridge Race Report & Results

We would like to thank everyone for contributing to another incredible weekend of racing, in particular our sponsors and all of the hardworking volunteers – especially those that logged long hours in the rain on Sunday. You are all awesome!

On Saturday, Ottawa’s Gregory Moore won the Sprint Triathlon by 1:26 over Toronto’s Ruston Martin. Moore stayed near the front during the swim and bike, and then ran a second best 18:32 5 km split to take the win in 1:05:00. Toronto’s Natalie Scadden won the women’s race in 1:11:14 thanks to a top 11:19 750 m swim split, and a 21:50 run. Toronto’s Jennifer Nicol rode the top women’s 20 km bike (36:08) to finish second (1:12:47). Oakville’s Kevin Smith dominated the Sprint Duathlon. Smith posted top splits for the 5 km run (17:08), 20 km bike (32:57), and 2.5 km run (8:55) to be the only athlete to go under 1 hour (59:51). Toronto’s Andrew James Mundie was second (1:05:42). Also from Oakville, Monica Lau used her run (best 5km run – 20:35, and 2.5 km – 10:15) to take the women’s victory in 1:12:53, 2:53 ahead of Newmarket’s Pamela Lawson in second.

Although the race conditions were wet on Sunday, we certainly did not experience the same torrential rain and thunderstorms as last year, at least not during the bike. Mother Nature saved that for later in the day and our post-race awards. Thanks to all who stuck around. Many who did were awarded with some sweet draw prizes courtesy of our sponsors. Regardless, the overcast and cool conditions led to some fast racing.

In the Half Iron Triathlon, which also served as the Ontario Long Course Triathlon Championships, Oakville’s Tyler Lord defended his title from last year. Lord rode a race best 2:22:14 to take the lead, and ran a 1:33:09 half marathon to win in 4:26:50. Just ahead of Jakob Van Dorp (4:29:05), an accomplished athlete who was 13th at February’s Coast to Coast World Multisport Championships in New Zealand.

“John put a great race together that was safe, competitive and spectator friendly. The swim was fast and getting onto the bike I was excited to see what the Ironman training has done. My goal was all about heart rate and not time, I didn't even wear a watch,” said Lord. “My new hot pink Mack Bike was super fast and aggressive, which put me ahead by 7 minutes on the bike. Into the run again was all about heart rate and kept my heart rate around 148 the whole half marathon. Not the fastest half I have ever done but with no taper and with an Iron distance race ahead (Full Rev 3 in September) it was great to take a win again.”

By the way, Tyler has also signed up for Challenge Roth in Germany, but more on Roth later.

A close second in here in 2008, Aurora’s Shannon Kemp impressed all by leading from start to finish to win by over 10 minutes, breaking Claudia Johnston’s course record by 3:56, clocking 4:50:50. Michelle Shoup of Alpharetta, Georgia claimed second place in 5:00:57.

“Overall I was pretty happy with my performance. I felt really good on the run and that was my biggest goal for the day,” said Kemp, who is preparing for the Ironman World Championships. “My goal race for the season is Hawaii in October, the Bracebridge race was good timing and a great course for a test race. Thanks to all the volunteers and spectators for supporting us in the rain.”

Taking the overall victory in the Half Iron Duathlon was Whitby’s Tricia Bachman. Bachman used her run background to spank the entire field finishing in a time of 5:15:37, close to 10 minutes ahead of the second place finisher and top male, Adam Bunz of Port Colborne (5:25:10). Adam also raced the Sprint Duathlon the day before and placed 8th overall.

Bachman also set the new course record, and truly enjoyed her time on Sunday. “I wanted to take the time to once again thank you for such an incredible race event yesterday in Bracebridge. Rain or shine it is always a pleasure to compete in your events.  I am not sure if it is your relaxed tone of voice over the microphone or just the general atmosphere that your team creates but it is so enjoyable to attend,” said Bachman. “Thank you again for all your behind the scene little touches that makes Multisport Canada so amazing!”

All Half Iron distance finishers were presented with cool looking blue Headsweats finisher hats upon crossing the finish line.

Gravenhurst’s Steve Vandermolen (3:06:35) and Guelph's Karen Jeffrey (3:20:37) won the Half Iron Swim/Bike. While, in the GT 12.9 Drumbo’s Jesse Burt (35:47), and Newmarket’s Marnee Da Ponte (42:16) pulled off comfortable wins. The GT 12.9 also witnessed the participation of  Melanie McPherson, our You’ve Been Shot Award winner. Melanie joined the triathlon family Sunday, and with the amount of emails we’ve received, her performance inspired many, including someone who gave Melanie their own podium medal – Melanie was touched by that and by the many encouraging words and high fives she received. Her words say it best.

I just wanted to say thank you sooooooooo much for the chance to race in Bracebridge this weekend!! I totally had a blast! I learned some valuable lessons on how to race (and how not to), and I was on the receiving end of the most amazing act of sportsmanship I believe I have ever seen.

I thought you might like to hear about it, because I think it probably speaks to quality of athletes you guys have racing with you.

After coming up from the finish and changing into some dry clothes with Steph's help I went under the pavilion and started taking victory pictures with my handlers and cheering section. Right as we were taking a picture this women in a pink jacket with blond hair and what I think was an Australian accent came up to us and hung her age group winning medal around my neck. She told me she had seen me finish, that I was one of the most amazing athletes she had seen, and that I deserved the medal more then she did. Even after I pleaded with her to allow me to give it back she insisted that she had plenty at home and that I had earned the right to keep it over her. She walked away before I could utter anything more then a simple thank you. I never found out her name, shook her hand or even had the opportunity to truly tell her how much it meant to me. I'd really like to be able to thank her for how incredible she made me feel.

Please tell your staff I say thanks too, they're totally awesome and made me feel like a champ all day! The Bracebridge race may go down as one of the hardest I've ever done but if I'm going to face a challenge like that I'd rather do it amongst awesome people and your staff definitely gave me that chance!”

Make sure to visit MultiSport Canada Radio for post-race interviews with some of our race winners.

Congratulations go out to all our first timers, welcome to the Triathlon/Duathlon family.

Thanks for joining us at Bracebridge, we hope to see you again at Toronto Island.

A Reminder to all Athletes

Maintaining great relationships with the communities hosting our races is essential to ensuring that these races are successful and continue to exist. Therefore, athletes, please remember to be courteous out on the race course. Not only to volunteers and fellow racers, but also to the residents of the community you are racing in. And just like when you are out training, you need to share the road. It is a race but we do not own the road. Adopting the spirit of sharing and co-operation will make it a better experience for all.

Thanks To All Of Our Sponsors

We extend our thanks to each and every sponsor and the local bike, running and triathlon shops in the communities where you race. Race entry fees never cover the complete cost of a particular race or series of races and without the sponsors there is no race or race series that would survive without their support. We hope that you all take a moment to check out our Series Sponsors below or visit the sponsors page and see what they do and look at the products they sell. Please thank them for supporting the sports of Triathlon and Duathlon by trying and using their products. If you do visit them please take a moment to thank them for supporting Triathlon, Duathlon and Kids races in Ontario.
